Going live is one of those things I’ve been hesitant about. I’m the type of person who prefers having control over how my message is delivered. With edited content, I can take the time to ensure every word counts, every detail is intentional, and the message is clear. However, I know that by avoiding live streams, I might be missing out on some powerful opportunities to connect with my audience in real time. I also realize that I’m missing out on the benefits of sharing more of my life and building a stronger connection through that raw, unscripted format. That said, I have no problem picking up the phone and talking to you personally if you want to connect with me one-on-one.
There are undeniable benefits to going live. One of the biggest advantages is the ability to interact directly with your audience. People can ask questions, give feedback, and engage with you in the moment. This kind of connection builds trust and creates a sense of authenticity that can’t always be achieved with edited content. Live streams also allow you to show your personality in a raw and unfiltered way, which can make you more relatable.
On the other hand, going live can feel intimidating. There are no second takes or editing tools to fix mistakes. If something goes wrong, you have to handle it in real time. It’s also challenging to stay on message when you’re dealing with distractions or unexpected interruptions. The pressure to perform can sometimes overshadow the enjoyment of sharing your message.
Edited content, in contrast, gives you complete control over how your ideas are presented. You can refine your message, cut out mistakes, and polish your delivery until it’s exactly how you want it. This approach is great for building a professional image and ensuring clarity in your communication. It’s also a better option if you prefer to plan your content thoroughly and avoid the unpredictability of live streaming.
However, edited content can sometimes feel less personal. Without the spontaneity of live interaction, it might not create the same level of engagement or immediacy. It can also take more time to produce, especially if you’re a perfectionist like me. The editing process can be time consuming, which might limit how frequently you’re able to share new content.
At the end of the day, both live streams and edited content have their place. The key is finding a balance that works for your goals and comfort level. While I might not love the idea of going live, I’m starting to see the value in stepping out of my comfort zone. As I always say, “Your comfort zone isn’t really that comfortable, so get into your comfort zone.” ~ Michael Petty. It’s all about learning and growing while staying true to who you are.
